# Are bitless bridles gentler for the horse?

Bitless does not necessarily mean gentler for the horse. Unlike bits, which act mainly on the horse’s mouth, a bitless bridle acts primarily on the **nose and poll**. 

Its severity depends on several factors, such as the **design of the noseband and the rider’s contact**. 

Bitless bridles should be used on **trained horses** accustomed to this type of communication and by knowledgeable, **experienced riders**; otherwise, they risk becoming uncomfortable or even dangerous for the horse.
